CAMDEN COUNTY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE CONDEMNS RACIST VANDALISM IN LAWNSIDE, NJ
The Camden County Democratic Committee stands united in condemning the recent act of racism that occurred in Lawnside, New Jersey, where offensive language was spray-painted on a resident's property. This reprehensible act goes against the values of inclusivity and respect that our community holds dear.
Jim Beach, Chairman of the Camden County Democratic Committee, stated, "This act of vandalism is not just an attack on one individual but an affront to the entire community of Lawnside and its rich history. We stand in solidarity with the residents of Lawnside and will work tirelessly to ensure that such acts of hate have no place in our county."
Barbara Holcomb, Vice Chairwoman of the Camden County Democratic Committee, added, "Lawnside's legacy is one of strength and unity. We must honor that legacy by coming together to denounce hate and promote understanding."
Lawnside holds a unique place in Southern New Jersey's history as one of the first self-governing African American communities in the northern United States. Founded by free Black people in the 19th century, Lawnside has long been a symbol of resilience and progress. It is a community that has historically been a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring fight for equality and justice.
Mayor Mary Ann Wardlow of Lawnside remarked, "Lawnside has always been a community that stands up against injustice. We will not be intimidated by acts of hate. Instead, we will continue to honor our heritage and work towards a future where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.”
Rosy Arroyo, President of the Camden County Federation of Democratic Women, expressed her outrage, saying, "As a community, we must remain vigilant against racism in all its forms. This incident is a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to achieve true equality.”
Digna Townsend Jones, Chair of the Camden County Democratic Committee’s Black Caucus, emphasized, "This act of racism is a painful reminder of the challenges we face. However, it also strengthens our resolve to fight for justice and equality. We will not be silenced."
The Camden County Democratic Committee calls on all residents to join in rejecting hate and supporting efforts to foster a more inclusive and equitable community. Together, we can ensure that Camden County remains a place where diversity is celebrated and all individuals are valued.
Home in historically Black Lawnside hit by racist graffiti

A home in the historically Black community of Lawnside in Camden County was hit by racist graffiti shortly after the election, prompting condemnations as well as shows of community support for the woman who lives there.
Dawn Hines, 53, said she found out on Thursday from a neighbor that somebody spray-painted a racist phrase for Black people on her back fence, which can be seen from the often busy Evesham Road.
“We’ve never gotten anything like this before,” said Hines, who has lived in the house for 20 years and called the incident a hate crime.
Hines said the fence was unmarked during the day Wednesday, so the graffiti occurred sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
